紐約時報報導，美國人口統計局6日發表報告指出，美國65歲及65歲以上人口的總數，預料將在2050年達8370萬人，比目前的4310萬人增加近一倍，占屆時全美總人口的五分之一以上。

相較之下，1970年時全美65歲以上人口不到10%。

紐時說，人口學家早就預估美國人口會在本世紀後半段明顯老化，但如今生育率和死亡率雙雙下降，導致這種人口老化加速，預料將對社會福利系統、健康照護及教育形成深遠影響。
